Reflections on the RSA 2023
The Netzwerk at the 2023 RSA Conference in San Juan, Puerto Rico
Between 9-12 March Dr. Laura Tillery (Hamilton College) and Suzie Hermán (Princeton University) organized a panel on “New Perspectives on the Hanse” at the annual conference of the Renaissance
Society of America. Aside from sharing the accomplishments and the future plans and goals of the Netzwerk, two speakers shared their research and reflections on late-medieval panel painting and
architecture. Dr. Kerttu Palginomm (research curator at the Niguliste Museum in Tallinn) gave a talk entitled “The Altarpiece of St Mary in Tallinn: An Example of Exchange on Global Scale.” Dr.
Palginomm shared findings from the technical investigations on the Altarpiece of St. Mary and also offered insights on the ways in which the Master of the Legend of St. Lucy and the commissioning
urban group in Tallinn would have found luxurious objects and materials. Prof. Dr. Tomasz Torbusz (University of Danzig) gave a presentation “Master Enkinger alias Carpentarius an outstanding
Gdańsk Architect on the Threshold of Modern Times or a Historical Fairy Tale,” which matched the modern historiography against the material record to understand more about the enigmatic Master
Enkinger. The panel raised interest and attracted researchers and curators from various subfields, as well as promoted the Netzwerk to an international audience.

New Perspectives on the Hanse Call for Papers | RSA2023
From the middle of the twelfth century onwards, Hanse merchants from Middle Low German-speaking areas engaged in long-distance trade and formed an extensive commercial network of both merchants
and towns. The surprising resourcefulness of Hanse merchants, however, enabled them to adapt and sustain their kinetic network throughout the early modern period, well into the nineteenth
century. Although the Hanse has been traditionally cast as a regional player before early modern global entanglements, this session aims to reconsider outdated perspectives on the pre- and early
modern Hanse. We invite papers from any discipline on a topic that offers new approaches to the Hanse. Papers that interrogate the Hanse during early modern global and colonial entanglements are
especially welcome.
Potential topics may address but are not limited to:
● the history and visual culture of Hanse cities and Kontore
● Hanse merchants and art patronage
● trade and exchange of the Baltic Sea region
● postcolonial approaches to artistic geography and/or Hanseatic art ● the Hanse in the “Age of Encounter”
● connected histories and the Hanse
● enslavement and trade inequities
● the Hanse and the Atlantic
● historiography of Hanse studies
Founded in 2011, the Netzwerk Kunst und Kultur der Hansestädte serves as the platform for the international and interdisciplinary exchange of scholars on the subject of the Hanse and is open to
all interested.
